METU wildflowers and vegetation

The natural vegetation of the METU campus is steppe: a landscape dominated by grasses and flowering herbs. Trees in natural steppe are usually old remnants or small woody plants adapted to drought. Legumes, mints, daisies, and grasses are among the most prominent plant families on campus.
The campus can broadly be described as thyme-milkvetch steppe, although dozens of other species accompany them. Sage may dominate one slope, while grasses such as feather grass and fescues cover another. These changes are part of the steppe’s richness rather than a single uniform vegetation type.
On the southern ridges of Yalıncak, drought-adapted low woody plants are especially visible. Cushion plants, sages, stonecrops, eastern almond, blackthorn, and other shrubs give the hills different colors through the seasons. Spring flowering makes many shrubs far more noticeable than they are in summer.
From northern Yalıncak toward the campus buildings, shrubs become less frequent and herbs such as sainfoins, vetches, and other legumes become more conspicuous. Some striking plants are restricted to particular patches. Stipa grasses and plants that break away and roll with the wind also shape the open steppe.
On flatter ground, poppies and other species join the vegetation. Soil differences create patches that favor salt-tolerant plants or species associated with a high water table. Eroded, sun-exposed slopes support cushion-forming milkvetches whose deep roots, narrow hairy leaves, and spines help them persist and protect the soil.
Seasonal streams between Yalıncak and Koçumbeli become audible in spring and fade by early summer. Tall herbs, willows, and roses continue to reveal the stream corridors after surface water disappears. Meadow-like sections may support rare and showy plants such as loose-flowered orchid and eastern iris.
Steppe soil is generally alkaline, calcareous, and low in organic matter. Even so, it supports a colorful flora and the insects, birds, and small mammals that depend on it. The campus landscape is therefore not empty land: it is a living ecological system that changes with slope, soil, water, disturbance, and season.
METU Plants Herbarium
The METU Plants Herbarium is an archive in which plant specimens collected on campus are dried, mounted, catalogued, and preserved. Herbaria provide reference collections for biology, medicine, pharmacy, forestry, agriculture, and other fields. An unknown specimen can be compared with preserved material using characters such as leaf shape, flower dimensions, and hairs.
Why herbarium specimens matter
Identification keys narrow possibilities through observable characters, but closely related plants often require direct comparison with authenticated specimens. A well-prepared and correctly identified herbarium sheet provides evidence that can be examined again long after the field season.
How a specimen is prepared
- Collect responsibly, taking as little as possible and never endangering the local population.
- When appropriate, include the important organs needed for identification: root, stem, branches, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds.
- Record locality, coordinates, elevation, habitat, and geological context in the field.
- Arrange and press the specimen between absorbent sheets and ventilating cardboard so it dries without losing diagnostic structures.
- Identify the dried material, prepare a label, mount the specimen, enter its data in the collection database, and archive it for future study.
